Video Storytelling
About the Work
These videos were done as a part of my graduate program at Georgia State University. Through the program, I developed my skills as a visual storyteller by creating numerous videos, whether that meant at home in my bedroom during the 2020 quarantine, finding compelling stories out in my local community, producing a documentary, or through working on GSU TV’s own travel program Georgia Detours while mentoring undergraduate students. Don’t forget to watch in 1080p!
The Last Atlanta Film Censor
From 1945 to 1964, Christine Smith Gilliam decided what films could be shown in Atlanta theaters and what films were banned from playing. As Atlanta's final film censor, she faced legal battles and changing attitudes that ultimately brought about the demise of the Atlanta censor's office. This 30 minute documentary represents the culmination of my time in my graduate program at Georgia State University and chronicles Smith Gilliam’s almost 20 tumultuous years as Atlanta’s official movie censor. It aired on Georgia Public Broadcasting in May 2022 and was subsequently nominated for a Southeast Emmy award. Produced, written, and edited by myself.
